ABOUT:

Information on this bill from Rob Hogg’s action alert:

In SF2117, Senate Republican leaders are proposing major mid-year budget cuts including:

* cut our universities by $19.2 million (roughly $250 per student)
* cut our community colleges by $5.4 million
* cut our judicial system by $4.8 million
* cut human services by $9.9 million
* cut corrections by $3.4 million

These proposed cuts would cost students money, reduce services, and eliminate jobs. They come on top of a budget that last year included many mid-year budget cuts, closings of programs and institutions, and other significant shortfalls. Coming in the middle of the budget year, they would cause bad decisions to be made. This is budget mis-management and bad for our economy. We need to stop these cuts.

After seven years of the Branstad and Reynolds Administrations, Iowa’s budget is a mess, but we don’t need to panic with bad decisions. Our rainy day funds are over $600 million; the purpose of rainy day funds is to give us a cushion to prevent bad short-term decision-making. So let’s stop the cuts, avoid the damage that would be done to Iowans, and then work to put Iowa on a better economic course for the future.
