Our Team
Activate Iowa is a progressive communications support team — 100% volunteer-run.
We’re building a statewide network of communications volunteers providing digital expertise, organizing tools, and voter information to Democratic Party county organizations and progressive organizations across Iowa.
Our History
2017 — We launched with a focus on connecting resistance organizations and Iowa Democratic Party groups through a statewide online calendar. We also began offering digital design work to county parties in eastern Iowa.
2018–2020 — We tracked Iowa legislative activity and provided action plans through an effort called Statehouse Hub.
2022–2024 — We refocused on creating accurate, thorough voter information for online distribution and printed handouts: the Let’s Vote Guide.
2024 — The Let’s Vote Guide took off. Customized handouts were adopted by 7 eastern Iowa counties and reached over 35,000 voters, distributed by county party organizations and the Bohannan campaign.
Why We’re Focused on Websites Now
About half of Iowa’s county Democratic parties have no website. They rely entirely on Facebook for their online presence—including volunteer recruitment and event management.
When an organization relies solely on social media, their efforts are at the mercy of the algorithms. There’s no real ownership of communications. An up-to-date website provides a hub that voters, volunteers, and donors can rely on.
That’s why we launched our Website Program—to help close this gap across Iowa.
